NSMQ: "The Quiz Mistress's Rule is Affirmed" - NSMQ Responds to Prempeh College
Following a protest, Prempeh College launched after their 'gracious defeat' in this year's edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz Semi-final contest between themselves, Opoku Ware School, and Pope John's SHS.
The coordinators of the Prempeh College NSMQ team and Old Boys, speaking for and on behalf of Prempeh College, wrote to express their displeasure with the events leading up to the conclusion of the competition between Prempeh College, Pope Johns Senior High, and Opoku Ware School on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Saarah Mensah Auditorium of KNUST Kumasi.
The heart of the controversy lies in a particular question posed during the last round, Round 5, which involved a riddle about a fundamental physics principle. The Prempeh College contestant responded with "the principle of superposition." However, the consultant argued that the correct answer was "the principle of linear superposition," asserting that other types of superposition, such as exponential superposition, existed in physics.
Primetime, the organizers of the competition, have released a notice in response to Prempeh College's protest, affirming the initial decision made by the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufman, and the Physics consultant's decision. According to the organizers, the answer to the riddle was indeed "the principle of linear superposition," and they found no compelling reason to overturn the initial ruling.
Primetime however cautioned Prempeh College that, “sullying the reputation of the competition is not an action one takes when one is truly gracious in defeat; disagreeing, but accepting the outcome in good faith is graciousness in defeat."
As the academic community waits for a resolution to this ongoing debate, it's clear that the NSMQ has stirred not only scientific curiosity but also a quest for fairness and accuracy among its participants and spectators.
